2021-22 Signing Alert – Alex Murray

Tonight, the Solent Devils are delighted to announce the re-signing of player / coach, Alex Murray.

Murray is returning for his 12th season as a player and 9th as head coach, commenting upon his return

I’m honoured to be returning as Head Coach of the Solent Devils for the 21-22 campaign. This team is very close to my heart and I look forward to carrying on buildng this great club!

When asked about team and personal goals next season Murray reflected on previous season achievements, stating…

This season is going to be our biggest test yet! With a lot of uncertainty around the pandemic, supporters and guidelines, we simply cannot begin to predict how this will play out. Regardless, we are hoping to continue were we left off, winning the Spring Cup & in the league – competing for the title.

Discussing how valuable was it to the team to participate in the Spring Cup Series, Murray reflected on the tremendous efforts from everyone…

To be one of 4 teams in the south who were able to compete during the Spring Cup is a true testament to how committed our team, volunteers and supporters are! We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and have lots of people, including the EIHA to thank for facilitating the event!
It will ultimately help us for next season, understanding COVID protocols will hopefully give us an edge.

With over half of the NIHL 1 teams not competing in the Spring Cup series, how do you approach a match against teams that haven’t played competitively for 18 months?

It will be strange for sure. I quite enjoyed the teams and set up for the Spring cup. Honest teams, all playing within the spirit of the game, made the competition enjoyable. For those returning, we look forward to renewing our rivalries with all teams and we all look forward to returning to the ice

In the past 9 months the governing body for the sport, the EIHA, has under gone significant change in membership and structure, turning his thoughts to a revitalised EIHA

It’s a little unknown at the moment. Obviously a lot has changed over the past year! One things for sure, the EIHA, in particular Andrew Miller, we’re very supportive during the Spring Cup.

Reflecting on the last 18 months with the restrictions in place and the changes in working, travel and life in general what positives came out of that experience for you or the team?

It was the feeling of pride and accomplishment. We successfully competed in a safe environment, with no COVID cases for 4 months! It goes to show that we all should overcome the pandemic soon! We were delighted to be able to provide some entertainment to our supporters and fans from other clubs during a difficult time.
It’s certainly something I will remember for the rest of life.

Speaking about the return of supporters to the venues

We simply cannot wait until the supporters return to the Solent Arena! The Spring Cup was very surreal without our loud, loyal home support. We hope that as many of them as possible are allowed to return, once safe to do so

Murray will return to the Devils in shirt #73. If you would like to sponsor a Devil or become a team sponsor, contact devilssupporters@outlook.com.

Solent Devils confirm participation in the 2021-22 NIHL League 1 Season

The Spring Cup 2021 winners – Solent Devils will be returning to the ice from September this year with a full squad to compete in the NIHL South 1 League.

Whilst the delay announced last week to venues opening fully, we’re hopeful that as the autumn evenings draw in, our supporters will return to spend the evening at the rink and get our hockey family back together after so long apart.

A team spokesperson said

“After another nail biting finale the team managed to secure the spring cup league victory, preparation for the series brought lots of challenges to the players and staff alike.. It was great to see supporters from all teams participating in the online chat and whilst apart, we were still together, now the hard work of pre-season preparation begins for all.“

Look out on social media for news of the season ahead, signing alerts, sponsorship opportunities, season ticket and gate prices as we get closer to the start of the season.

Solent Devils Spring Cup Series Comes to an End

We’d like to take the opportunity to thank you all for you support during the Spring Cup Series, with your donations we’ve been able to raise £600 for NHS Charities.

The series wouldn’t have been possible without the funding from Sport England through the DCMS Winter Sport Survival Pack and the support of the EIHA.

The series was intense, engaging, fun and rewarding, it delivered on it’s goals to return players to a safe and secure environment and created the opportunity to continue the development of the young talent within the sport.

Although a second series has been offered we have decided that as we emerge from the isolation we’ve all been experiencing for the past year that it is time for the players and staff to focus on next season and spend some valuable time with family and friends over the summer.

Our season would normally end with playoffs at Easter and this weekend was as eventful as a playoff with the series win going down to the wire.

We hope you enjoyed the live streams, and we’ll put some highlights out over the summer as part of the build up to hopefully welcoming you back into the stands and once again sharing the warmth of your support on a Saturday winters evening.

Government Funding for Winter Sports

The Sports Minister has announced that elite, national and regional ice hockey will receive an unprecedented £2.7 million of Government funding in the latest round of the Sport Winter Survival Package.
The support will be formed of £2.3 million in loans and grants provided to four English clubs within the Elite Ice Hockey League: the Sheffield Steelers, Nottingham Panthers, Manchester Storm and Coventry Blaze.
£400,000 in grants will also be provided to the English Ice Hockey Association and English clubs in the National Ice Hockey League.

For the past 20 years ice hockey has been the biggest attended indoor sport in the UK, and is the third most regularly attended sport in terms of spectators. However as a result of the public health measures necessary to contain the coronavirus pandemic and the financial uncertainty these have caused, the Elite Ice Hockey League opted not to run the 2020/21 season.

The funding will cover essential costs necessary for the sport’s survival and to get back playing, including the launch of the 2021 Elite Series.

Formed of the four aforementioned clubs and taking place from 3 April – 3 May in Nottingham, the mini-series – which will be streamed online – will allow fans to support their team and help the Great Britain men’s national ice hockey team in their preparations for the IIHF World Championship later this year.
The funding has already allowed some National Ice Hockey League clubs to also resume action, supporting local ice rinks in the process.

Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston said:

“This unprecedented support for ice hockey will act as a lifeline for the sport and ice rinks across the country. The reality is that without stepping in, it would have meant 18 months of no live action. Visibility is important to inspire the next generation, so I’m delighted that we’ve been able to work with the relevant bodies to develop a new proposal that supports the highest level of the sport through the Elite Series, and has also given clubs at regional level the confidence to return to the ice.”

Tony Smith, Chairman of the Elite Ice Hockey League, said:

“The UK’s top professional ice hockey league – the Elite Ice Hockey League – is thrilled to be able to get back on the ice with the backing from amongst others: the teams, the government and (when the action starts) the massive army of fans that follow us. In an ever changing landscape caused by the pandemic it is testament to the collective power that everyone pulling together can bring that we are going to stage a four team top flight event which will give fans something to cheer. At the same time the best players in the country will get a chance to compete for a place on the ‘plane to the World Championships. Without this series the GB players could have landed badly underprepared for games against the world’s elite. A tremendous amount of work and commitment is going on to make this event happen and we thank everyone for their support.”

EIHA director Andrew Miller added:

“The Association and our clubs are grateful to the Government for their support of our sport as part of the Sport Winter Survival Package.  Their help and the hard work of our teams, players and staff as well as our venues has enabled us to return three competitions and around 400 athletes to the ice. We look forward to a fuller return to play for more of our clubs and athletes in the coming weeks.”

This is the fourth tranche of funding to be announced from the Government’s £300 million Sport Winter Survival Package that is focused on helping those major spectator sports severely impacted by coronavirus restrictions survive the winter

It follows the Government announcing more than £40 million provided to support grassroots rugby union clubs, up to £5.5 million to support the launch of the men’s Championship competition and £1.1 million for professional women’s rugby, including the Premier 15s and covid-19 related costs for the Red Roses’ Women’s Six Nations campaign.

In February the Government announced a major boost for women’s sport, with an initial £2.25 million for women’s football, £4.2 million to netball, a combined £4 million for badminton and basketball, and that women’s sport would be prioritised for 250,000 free Covid-19 testing kits being made available to elite sports, worth £1.5 million. It was also announced that an initial 19 National League Step 1-2 clubs would be offered loans worth up to £5.4 million.

The first announcement in January confirmed that Steps 3-6 of the National League system will receive up to £10 million to protect the immediate future of approximately 850 clubs over the winter period.

Submissions for support have been made from individual sports to an independent decision-making Board, supported by Sport England.

The Sport Winter Survival Package is the most generous of any Government for its domestic sport sector in the world. It comes on top of the sector benefiting from more than £1.5 billion worth of business support that has been made available by the Government, including the furlough scheme, business rates relief and business interruption loan scheme that has helped many sports clubs and leisure businesses to survive.

Earlier this month the Chancellor announced a further £300 million of support that is expected to benefit major summer spectator sports such as cricket, tennis and horse racing, as the path out of lockdown continues and sports stadia initially open at reduced capacities. Further details, including how cash will be distributed, how organisations can apply and timeframes, will be announced by Sport England in the coming weeks.

Further confirmations of funding from the Sports Winter Survival Package will be made in due course.
